Reeling once again rolls out the pink carpet as we open our 28th edition with
The Big Gay Musical! Through rousing musical numbers that feature scantily clad tap-dancing angels, a clever retelling of Genesis, creepy televangelists, and a camp that attempts to turn gay kids straight, everyone realizes that life gets better once they accept who they really are.

New Queer Cinema:
Now or Never- 3:00 pm - Panel
Film Row Cinema
In the early 90s, Sight & Sound magazine’s B. Ruby Rich coined the term, "New Queer Cinema," after she noted many films dealing with unconventional sexualities using a radical visual and narrative approach. Among the ranks of this movement were Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho), Todd Haynes (Poison) and Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation). Even as key directors from that movement have ‘gone mainstream,’ queer cinema has proliferated. But what has become of that radical impulse? Reeling and The Queer Film Society are proud to present a panel discussion on the state of independent queer cinema – then, now and toward the future. Join gay film critics Hank Sartin from Time Out Chicago, Richard Knight, Jr. from Windy City Times, Jonathan Lewis from Gay Chicago Magazine, Joe Steiff who is co-chair of the Film & Video Department at Columbia College Chicago, Wendy Jo Carlton, director of Hannah Free, and Nick Davis, an Assistant Professor of English and Gender Studies at Northwestern and writer of nicksflickpicks.com, as they share their insights on the state of queer cinema. Will the rapidly growing number of indie films, mainstream movies and television programming featuring gay characters and themes increase recognition of queer audiences by the Hollywood studio system? Is Hollywood up to the task of accurately representing the LGBTQ community? Why don’t queer audiences support queer movies when they’re in theatres? What stories are still untold? Is Neil Patrick Harris the Great White Hope for gay superstardom? Does he have a female counterpart? More importantly – will others follow in his footsteps (should that be the case)? Are we ever going to see a Hollywood leading male actor (and actress) come out in our lifetime and continue to be a box office draw? The panel will include audience members in the discussion.
