Reeling opens this year’s festival on a high note with a super-spirited film that mixes the elements of musical theatre with a story of acceptance, discovery, friendship, lust, and love. From award-winning filmmaker Casper Andreas (director of Reeling favorites, Slutty Summer and A Four Letter Word) comes his most innovative film yet, The Big Gay Musical. Pleasing both die-hard show tune queens and serious filmgoers alike, this film turns the concept of creationism on its expertly-coiffed, gay head!
Aspiring actors Paul and Eddie are beginning to see their dreams come true as they find themselves the stars of the buzz-worthy off-Broadway musical comedy, "Adam and Steve Just the Way God Made 'Em." While dealing with their sudden professional notoriety, the two find their personal lives in upheaval, mirroring the lives of their onstage characters. Paul has grown weary of the gay New York dating scene, and is searching for a guy who is interested in a relationship lasting longer than one night. Eddie has just moved to New York, away from his conservative Christian family, and is grappling with the reality that they may cut him out of their lives forever. Through rousing musical numbers that feature scantily clad tap-dancing angels, a clever retelling of Genesis, creepy televangelists, and a camp that attempts to turn gay kids straight, everyone realizes that life gets better once they accept who they really are.
