5:00 PM Ky Dickens USA, 2009 Total: 60 min. Link to Film Website | | There is hardly an issue more divisive in this country (short of abortion), than gay rights. People have lost their lives, elections have been defined and determined, and families have been torn apart. Homosexuality has been described as an abomination, unnatural, and a slippery slope to overall moral degradation—hatred is spewed and discrimination is condoned, all in the name of the Lord. While the religious right holds onto the Bible and its “interpretations” in a near death-grip, many gays and lesbians fight to reconcile their own sexuality with their faith. No stranger to struggling with her own sense of spiritual identity, writer-director Ky Dickens takes us on her journey to challenge unfounded bigotry disguised as indisputable Christian tenets. Fish Out of Water mixes animation with community and scholarly interviews to explore the Bible verses used to condemn homosexuality. Intermixed with footage from nationwide Prop 8 protests and various wedding ceremonies, the film touches on the marriage debate, issues of procreation, public and pastoral fear, the overused Sodom and Gomorrah example, and scripture context. A frank documentary, Fish out of Water presents facts and appeals to logic in a succinct, fresh way, while remaining accessible, personal and poignant.
