Reeling is proud to close this year with 20 Centimeters. “Vastly entertaining” says Variety about this flamboyant extravaganza that has been wowing audiences at festivals around the world. Director Salazar gives us a colorful mixture of Hollywood musical, neo-realism and Almodovarian kitsch as he tells the story of Marieta (born Adolfo), a pre-op transgender hooker who longs to get rid of the 8 inch appendage that prevents her from becoming the glamorous woman she yearns to be. But that’s not Marieta’s only problem: she’s also narcoleptic. And this is where the fun begins. When Marieta falls uncontrollably asleep in the dour real world, she finds herself in a wildly imaginative dream realm, where she is the star of her own elaborately choreographed Technicolor musicals, surrounded by handsome men. After one such narcoleptic episode, Marieta awakens to find herself rescued by the studly Raul. But, as they begin a passionate sexual relationship, Marieta faces a big dilemma: Raul likes her just the way she is, 20 centimeters and all. What’s a girl to do when the new boyfriend wants the whole “package”? 35mm, 113 min. Film Row Cinema at Columbia College: 1104 S.
