Gender Play
Shorts Program
8:00pm

A romper room of gender views, these vivid and daring shorts explore a range of issues and discussions surrounding transgender, intersex, childhood gender identity and gender queerness. But don’t be mistaken, these are not just theoretical exercises; they are portraits of real people who are pushing society’s boundaries through honesty, activism and fun.

Gender PLAY! (Philipe Lonestar, US, 2005): The schoolyard jungle gym becomes a site for investigating the multiplicity of ideas young people have about gender identity and queerness.

Action Wo/Man (Joey Hateley, UK, 2004): A little girl’s fairy tale is turned inside out and upside down when the artificiality of costume and appearance is revealed.

Ani(Fe)Mal(e) (Hester Scheurwater, The Netherlands, 2005): A weird and wonderful performative examination of gender.

Secret Picnic (Philipe Lonestar, US, 2005): Three friends go for a picnic in a vibrant and slightly surreal garden.

Sway (Jakeb Anhvu, Australia, 2004): Andie was born with a condition called Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome or AIS. At five, doctors made a terrible mistake by deciding she should live as a boy.

Passing Suburbia (Beate Rathke and Christine Woditschka, Germany, 2005): Suburban Berlin is filled with houses, cars, pets…and cowboys?

Not So Black or White (Col Cruise, UK, 2006): A black and white abstraction is paired with a revealing narration on the seemingly invisible experience of intersex.

Do I Look Like Your Husband (Ruth Goldman, US, 2006): A woman genuinely and affectingly describes a lifetime spent questioning gender.

Mirror Stage Scene (Joey Hateley, UK, 2004): Using minimalist composition and touching dialogue, this short provides a simple and honest response to a subject that is anything but easy.

Jonathan (Adi Helman, Israel, 2006): A young Israeli boy is devastated by not being allowed to wear a dress to Purim.

Just A Boy (Aidan Orion Crawford, US, 2005): An FtM filmmaker documents the effect his life changing decision to transition made on his parents.

Video, Total: 79 min.
