Pre-party
at the Chicago History Museum
The decade of electric pink leg warmers and crimped
hair is back thanks to ‘80s flashback film The
Curiosity of Chance. Reeling’s
Closing Night Auction, sponsored
by Orbitz, Olivia, and Showtime, will feature two round
trip tickets to Europe from Orbitz, a 7-day Olivia Cruise
for two, and memorabilia from Showtime favorites The
L Word and Queer
as Folk, as well
as donations by some of Chicago’s finest gay-friendly establishments.
Pull out that Duran Duran sweatshirt and join us for hors
d’oeuvres, Stella Artois, and Stolichnaya Russian Vodka
to get you in the mood for this entertaining film.
If
you love the John Hughes films of the ‘80s but always knew
deep down that Sixteen
Candles’ Duckie was a total flamer
and Some
Kind of Wonderful’s car mechanic
tomboy wasn’t
really in love with the boy after all, writer/director
Russell P. Marleau may have created the perfect retro
coming-of-age movie just for you … albeit
a couple of decades later.
It’s the 1980s, New Wave angst and gender-bending fashion
are all the rage, and out and proud Chance Marquis (a
devastatingly cute Tad Hilgenbrink) is the new kid at
Brickland International High. Immediately terrorized
by the closed-minded jock bully, Chance decides to fight
back with flair, befriending a bizarre circle of friends
(including a boy next door with a killer six-pack played
by Brett Chukerman of Eating
Out 2: Sloppy Seconds) to help him bring down the bigots
threatening his would-be-peaceful academic existence.
Chock-full of the comic conventions of the high school
genre—the idiot faculty,
the good-hearted but delusional parents, the fairy tale reversal of popularity—The
Curiosity of Chance is a frothy bit of nostalgic filmmaking.
But knowing the genre doesn’t mean this comedy with a queer twist won’t also touch your heart.
Director Russell Marleau and Actor Brett Chuckerman will
be attending a post-film Q&A.
