Acclaimed British filmmaker Duncan Roy (Method, AKA) puts a modern, homoerotically charged twist on the classic Oscar Wilde tale of vanity and the corruption of the soul.

Based on Wilde’s only published novel, this contemporary retelling is transported from late nineteenth-century England to the wealthy, coked-up 1980s New York art scene. Artist Basil Hallward becomes obsessed with young Dorian Gray, whose unblemished beauty is the focus of Basil’s seductive new video portrait/installation.

When Dorian (played with menacing charm by former child actor David Gallagher of 7th Heaven) watches the video for the first time, he is fascinated but begins to resent the portrait, wishing it would grow old and ugly instead of him. His wish soon comes true, with shocking and dangerous consequences. Henry is the cynical friend and agent of Basil who befriends Dorian and guides his transformation from innocent angel to cold-blooded, baby-faced madman.

Incorporating daring music, clever art direction, and split-screen techniques, Roy’s bold and stylish adaptation examines provocative and relevant themes such as hedonism, gay hustling, AIDS, the obsession with eternal youth, and the true meaning of art.
