It began with the release of the Chicago produced Kevin’s Room in 2001—a boldly innovative effort to address the crisis of HIV/AIDS in the African American gay community.
Kevin’s Room II: Trust (2003), reinforced the message of inclusion, tolerance, and collective responsibility while tackling related issues of monogamy, sexual boundaries, and the re-emergence of STDs.
Now, the story comes full circle in Kevin’s Room: Together, the third and final installment of the Chicago-based series, which addresses new concerns reflected in today’s headlines—violence, sexual identity, spirituality—and the ways in which a community can help shape its own future.
In this installment, Kevin is prompted to organize a weekend retreat to encourage members of the community to “come together” after the shooting of a support group member at a popular nightspot. Against this backdrop, Kevin’s Room: Together combines established characters as well as new ones including Tatiana, a young transgendered woman, and Rodney, a college student seeking support and direction.
Presented in a reality show format, Kevin’s Room: Together gives us a unique, over-the-shoulder perspective of the action, and manages to round out Kevin’s story for the devoted fan, while remaining accessible to Kevin’s Room series newcomers.
