1968, France. The political and cultural upheaval in Paris is electrifying and the people are ready for change. Marc, a winsome young gay student who is writing his thesis about homosexual subtext in Shakespearian drama, finds a natural ally in Julie, and their friendship forms the rich basis of this thoughtful, poetic movie.
Marc and Julie are both involved in a Marxist/Feminist/Queer Rights group, and their struggles and triumphs as activists are mirrored by their failures and successes in love and life. Their group is briefly elated when gaining a major victory on campus, but then is just as quickly torn asunder by shifting political ideologies and aspirations.
Marc and Julie’s love lives are hardly simple, either. Marc lives with a blue-collar trick he picked up, who swears that he will one day give up his lifestyle and marry a woman. Meanwhile, Julie finds her staunch feminism at odds with girlish devotion to her male lover. Through it all, Marc records lingering moments of the quickly shifting landscape with his super 8 camera.
This is a beautifully photographed narrative, and, just like the era it depicts, brims with hope at times, and reels from confusion at others.
