The long running, off-Broadway, musical-comedy stage hit comes to the screen with a handsome, multiethnic cast and all its glorious, gratuitous nudity fully intact.
Since opening in Los Angeles in 1998, the full-frontal revue has played in more than twenty countries and toured theaters around the US—but not without controversy. The show, featuring such original songs as “I Beat My Meat,” “Perky Little Porn Star,” and “Muscle Addiction,” has been shut down in Milwaukee, Atlanta, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The screen adaptation features a restaged version of the play and new arrangements of original songs. Robert Schrock, director of the original production, shot the 16-song feature, with Troy Christian handling digital video direction and choreography. The cheeky show features clever songs written by a variety of theater and comedy vets (including Bruce Vilanch) and original LA cast member Vincent Zamora appears in the film.
Once viewers get past any initial nervous gasps and giggles, the able (and able-bodied) cast puts on one heck of an entertaining and good-natured show. But let’s face it, without the nudity there wouldn’t be a show and there’s plenty of tasty eye candy on display. And who doesn’t enjoy candy at the movies?
Writer Bruce Vilanch and Producer
Kirkland Tibbels will be attending a post-film Q&A.
