Sexy, engrossing, and thoroughly French, One
to Another is the tale of 20-year-old Lucie and her gay brother Pierre, who share an intimate relationship with each other and with the guys in Pierre’s rock band. Pierre is a magnet for the small band of youths, though he himself is unstable and narcissistic. One day Pierre disappears. As the police investigation drags on, Lucie decides to take it upon herself to find out what happened to her brother.
As we follow Lucie on her tempestuous investigation, we learn of complex dependencies and humiliations, where bodies are casually traded for clues. The idea of openness and this currency of the body are major themes explored by co-director Jean-Marc Barr, who says in an article with indieWIRE: One
to Another is about “the idea that today the only weapon one has to manifest one’s freedom today is with one’s body. Our hero, Pierre, is like a James Dean 2007; instead of racing a car off a cliff to show his revolt Pierre uses his body sexually to revolt.”
As Lucie travels, interrogates, and sleeps her way towards solving the mystery of what happened to her brother, the surprise ending prompts as many questions as it answers about how sexuality can both inspire and defeat us.
