We Are the Mods is what would happen if High Art merged with Twilight. It has all the artistic frames, sex, and drugs of the former; however, it also has the high school angst and sense of discovery of the latter. Sadie and Nico, two high school seniors from diverse worlds, form an unlikely friendship that allows both to explore new places within themselves. Sadie—a high school senior with dreams to attend a prestigious photography college and the grades and determination to make it happen—lives in a stable, predictable world. Her teachers encourage her, her mom has cookies ready when she comes home from school, and her room is orderly. But then Sadie meets the stereotypically dysfunctional Nico, who is wrapped up in sex, drugs, and alcohol. Nico does poorly in school, has an unhealthy home life and, although very attractive with good social skills, has no friends. When Sadie agrees to help the struggling Nico with photography, she becomes entranced by Nico’s wild life as a contemporary revivalist of 1960s British mod culture. Forced to reevaluate her college plans as a result of her new relationship, Sadie must weigh the value of her friendship with Nico in relation to her sense of identity and her future.
